Who we are

The Starship Foundation is the only dedicated charity which supports our amazing national children’s hospital, Starship. Its mission is to ensure sick and injured children have access to the very best treatments, life-saving equipment, critical care services, breakthrough research and family support initiatives.

Together with its supporters, the Starship Foundation has raised over $282million for sick and injured children in New Zealand, bridging the gap between what the Government provides and what the hospital really needs.More than 50% of children who come to Starship’s intensive care unit are from outside of Auckland.

Every year, more than 150,000 sick and injured children come to Starship for treatment from all over New Zealand.

What is our challenge

The biggest challenge for Starship is to meet the growing health needs of New Zealand children.

The population is growing, increasing demand for health services, and there is a disparity in population segments requiring hospitalisation. Health NZ figures for June 2023 show hospital admissions for babies and pre-schoolers rose  35% year-on-year.

Rates of hospitalisation have increased 44% in the last two decades for respiratory conditions. More than half of the children admitted for respiratory diseases are under one year of age. Māori are 1.8 times more likely to be hospitalised with respiratory problems and Pasifika 2.5 times than their European counterparts.  For acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease hospitalisations, 61% are from socioeconomic deprived backgrounds. (Cure Kids State of Child Health Report in Aotearoa NZ 2023).

What we do

Starship’s dedicated team of health professionals strive to deliver the best possible care every day.

For every $1 raised, approximately 66% is applied to the work. Every $1 invested in a child’s healthcare multiplies in impact over time giving a $4-5 saving in healthcare costs over their lifetime. (New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, 2018; Ministry of Health, 2020).

Your support of Starship today will have lasting healthcare benefits for our children, our health system and our country.

In 2025 and 2026, there continue to be projects that need support such as equipment purchases, refurbishments, clinical treatment programmes, research projects amongst others. The current economic environment is proving challenging for fundraising, but the needs remain. It is vital we continue to support Starship Child Health to enable them to achieve the lasting , meaningful  health outcomes New Zealand’s children and young people deserve.
